There's a big gap between the Instagram-perfect home and a genuinely clean, healthy one. Here's a realistic cleaning schedule based on what actually matters — not what looks good on a checklist.
Daily (5–10 minutes)
- Dishes: don't let them sit overnight — bacteria multiply quickly in residue
- Kitchen bench: wipe after cooking
- Bathroom basin: quick wipe after morning routine
- Floor: sweep in high-traffic areas if you have pets or kids
Weekly
- Kitchen: full clean of benchtops, stovetop, sink; mop floor; empty and wipe inside bin
- Bathrooms: toilet inside and out, shower, basin, floor mopped
- Floors: vacuum throughout, mop hard floors
- Bedding: change sheets weekly — dust mites thrive in bedding
Monthly
- Oven interior (or after anything bubbles over)
- Fridge interior: remove everything, wipe shelves and seals
- Shower head: soak in white vinegar to remove calcium buildup
- Exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchen: unscrew and wash the cover
- Ceiling fans: wipe blades — the dust there goes straight onto your face while you sleep
Every 3–6 Months
- Windows inside and out
- Behind and under major appliances
- Mattress: vacuum and rotate
- Carpet: professional steam clean (especially if you have pets or allergies)
The Things Most People Forget Entirely
- TV remote and keyboards — among the dirtiest surfaces in most homes
- Top of the fridge — collects dust and grease
- Inside the dishwasher filter
- Pillows — should be washed every 3–4 months
- Dryer lint trap — a fire hazard if left too long
